Tomás the desert tortoise lives in Nevada's beautiful Red Rock Canyon. Along with his desert-dwelling friends, Tomás finds plenty of adventures to keep himself busy. Tomás wanders down to Lake Mead to find cooling refreshment in One Hot Day, discovers what it's like to Play In The Clouds in Mt. Charleston on a cold winter's day, and brings holiday cheer to his crusty old tree friend Joshua in Joshua's Surprise.
The Desert Tortoise: Desert tortoises can live to be 100 years old. Females normally lay 4 to 6 eggs during the month of June in a shallow hole and cover it with dirt. The eggs will take several months to hatch. Although they live in the desert, they stay in their burrows during the heat of the day and come out to graze on blossoms, plants and grasses during the early morning and evening hours. They hibernate during the winter in their burrows.
